10 synths, 2 dudes, 1 end of an era, 1 new beginning

From idea to shipping the last one – one year. What a journey.

We made our first synth, the Hog back in 2024. It was a POC for ourselves to prove that we could actually build an analog synth that somewhat resembles an actual product. We never intended to mass produce it, but we knew our next product, the Moduleur, somehow needed to leave The Shed and get into the hands of real people.

It was scrappy, fun, sometimes frustrating and for sure not an easy journey, but look at the result:

We did the work, we walked the walk and got to collaborate with great people along the way. And most importantly: we learned a LOT.

Open source DIY first

The first Moduleur prototype was ready to make some noise around September 2025. It was a mess on the inside and weird plastic on the outside, but looked kinda like what we imagined. We tested, iterated and finally released an open source beta version to the synth DIY community before Christmas.

We shot an intro video one Friday afternoon which unexpectedly became a hit (who would have thought what a butt-scratch could do). And to our biggest surprise, some people picked up the soldering iron literally a few days after announcing the Moduleur – looking at you Matt ;)

The reaction to the release was overwhelmingly positive and things started moving. By February we finalized the electronics, the hardware design, the alumin(i)um housing, and we were ready to let the Moduleur out into the wild.

From 1.0 to 1/1

Our goal wasn't yet to create something that we could manufacture in the hundreds or thousands, we just wanted to make some and get them to people. A stepping stone, but a steady one. But how do you sell only a few synths? How do you keep it special?

After giving it a lot of thought we came up with the idea of the Moduleur 1/1 series: 10 completely unique designs for our biggest fans, offered through a draw. We were sceptic first about the idea, but after about 100 people signed up in the first day we decided to roll with it.

Design and coating

After figuring out this was partly an art project, the first design became a collab with Laci Naske who suggested we get in touch with Gábor Kristóf from RAL 5050 who specializes in custom paint jobs. They worked on the first synth together and dude, when we got it in our hands we were honestly blown away by the quality. Read slowly: it is next level shit.

Prior to this, our paint job technique was pure white or black powder coating and UV print. Gábor made the paint job magical, unique and a central piece of the final feel of the instruments! He is a wizard with techniques nobody else would dare to try in powder coating, and an absolute honor to work with. Make sure to follow his work, it's a feast for the eyes.

We made our own designs too but we continued collaborating with Dóri Sirály and Ákos Polgárdi to get some more uniqueness into the mix. The results are just jaw-dropping, I mean, look at these beauties:

One by one all the 1/1 Moduleurs found their homes in Europe over the last 7 months. It was always a weird feeling to get them to the GLS box, we got attached to them along the way, we kinda made them for ourselves after all.

The very last one arrived at its new owner this Wednesday, and with that, the Moduleur 1/1 Series is officially concluded.

What next?

There's demand for a DIY kit so we're looking into how we could pull that off. And in the meantime we're already working on some new stuff that's gonna be a ton of fun.
